Kitchen Appliance Guide

Appliance selections affect cabinet sizes, electrical wiring, gas lines, and ventilation systems. Making these decisions early ensures your kitchen is designed correctly from the very beginning.

Foundational Planning

Why Appliance Selections Matter

Appliances are often considered finishing items, but they affect construction decisions made much earlier in the project. Once walls are closed, changes become exceptionally difficult and costly.

Cabinet Sizes

Appliance dimensions determine surrounding cabinet widths, depths, and filler clearances.

Electrical Wiring

Many high-performance appliances require dedicated electrical circuits and 240V dedicated lines.

Gas Lines

Professional high-BTU ranges often demand larger diameter gas supply pipes and specific shut-off locations.

Ventilation

Range hoods require exterior ductwork routes planned early in framing and ceiling joist layout.

Countertop Layout

Cooktop and sink cutouts must match precise appliance dimensions before slab templating begins.

Panel-Ready Design

Integrated appliances accept custom wood panels to blend invisibly with custom bespoke cabinetry.

REFRIGERATORS

Refrigerator Options

The refrigerator is usually the largest appliance in the kitchen and often determines the layout of surrounding cabinetry. Three main styles are available, each with distinct installation requirements.

Cabinet Dimension Lock

Refrigerator width must be confirmed before cabinet design is finalized — surrounding panels and overhead bridge units depend on exact appliance dimensions.

DISCUSS REFRIGERATION SPECS WITH OUR TEAM

Standard (Freestanding)

Most common style. Extends slightly beyond standard 24″ deep surrounding cabinets for door clearance.

AVAILABLE WIDTHS:

30″  33″  36″

Counter-Depth

Aligns with cabinet depth for a cleaner, more built-in appearance while remaining a standard appliance installation with front-accessible components.

SPECIFICATIONS:

24″–25″ Deep

Built-In Refrigerator

Fully integrates with custom cabinetry. Accepts custom wood cabinet panels for a seamless high-end kitchen aesthetic. Features overhead commercial compressors.

Custom panel-ready  Requires surrounding panel planning during cabinet design.

Culinary Systems

Cooking Appliances

Cooking setups can be configured as a combined range or a separate cooktop and wall oven arrangement.

Combined
Range

Combines cooktop and oven in one singular all-inclusive appliance. The most common and space-efficient kitchen setup.

AVAILABLE WIDTHS:

30″  36″  48″Pro

Professional ranges (36″–48″) require stronger ventilation CFM and larger capacity gas supply lines (3/4″ diameter).

Flexible
Cooktop + Wall Oven

Separates the cooking surfaces. Cooktop installs into the countertop island or perimeter run, while ovens install ergonomically into a dedicated wall cabinet tower.

Cooktop

Installed flush into countertop. Gas or induction/electric options.

Wall Ovens

Installed in tall cabinet tower at eye level. Single, double, or combi- steam configurations.

*Requires two separate dedicated electrical feeds or combined gas + electric hookups.

Microwaves

Microwaves can be installed in several locations. Placement affects surrounding cabinetry design and dedicated electrical planning.

Above the Range (OTR)

Most common placement — saves counter space, requires venting.

Inside a Cabinet

Built into upper or lower cabinet — keeps counters clear.

Microwave Drawer

Increasingly popular in modern kitchens — installs comfortably below kitchen island counter.

Tall Appliance Cabinet

Integrated into a dedicated full-height appliance tower stacked above wall oven.

Dishwashers

Standard dishwashers are 24 inches wide and typically installed immediately adjacent to the kitchen sink. Some larger kitchens include two dishwashers for ultimate convenience.

Dishwasher Specifications

Seamless Integration: Panel-ready dishwashers accept a custom wood cabinet panel on the door for a seamless kitchen appearance.

Air Quality & Safety

Ventilation Systems

Cooking appliances generate heat, smoke, grease, and odors that must be vented properly. Ventilation planning requires ductwork routes to be confirmed early in construction.

Exterior Venting

Ductwork exhausts air and cooking byproducts directly outside the home. Required for high-BTU gas ranges to protect indoor air quality and eliminate excess moisture.

Recirculating Hood

Filters air internally through activated charcoal filters — used when exterior venting is structurally not possible due to condo restrictions or multi-story layouts.

Wall Mounted

Mounted on wall above range or cooktop — most common aesthetic choice.

Under-Cabinet

Fits beneath upper cabinets above the cooking surface for a subtle profile.

Built Into Cabinetry

Concealed hood insert inside cabinet structure above the cooktop.

Decorative Wood Hood

Custom wood surround with metal liner insert — a popular signature feature.

Seamless Design

Appliance Paneling

Panel-ready appliances accept custom cabinet panels on their doors creating a seamless kitchen appearance where appliances blend invisibly into the surrounding cabinetry.

Panel-Ready Refrigerators

Sub-Zero, Thermador, and Miele integrated units.

Panel-Ready Dishwashers

Fully concealed controls with projection status indicator lights on floor.

Panel-Ready Wine Refrigerators

Matching millwork frame with UV-filtering architectural glass.

Standard vs Panel-Ready

Stainless Finish

Appliance finish visible — stainless steel, matte black, or brand color front.

Custom Cabinet Front

Custom cabinet panel covers door — appliance disappears into the cabinetry architecture.

Important Cabinetry Dependency: Panel-ready selections must be confirmed before cabinet design is finalized to ensure hinge clearances and exact panel thickness specs.

Ergonomics & Proportion

Appliance Sizing Considerations

Kitchen Size

Large appliances can overwhelm smaller kitchens. Scale appliance selections to the room proportions.

Cooking Habits

Frequent cooks may prioritize professional-style ranges. Lighter cooks may prefer simpler setups with more storage instead.

Storage Needs

Match refrigerator capacity and pantry storage to your household size and grocery habits.

Experiential Selection

CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCING

Why Early Appliance Decisions Matter

Once cabinets are built and installed, changing appliance sizes or configurations becomes significantly more difficult. Selecting appliances early allows the entire kitchen to be designed correctly from the very beginning.

Confirm Before Cabinets Are Built

Appliance selections should be finalized before cabinet design begins. Changing sizes after installation is costly and complex.

01. Selection

Finalize model specs & exterior cutouts

02. Rough-In

Plumb water, gas, & 240V lines

03. Millwork

Build cabinets to match exact dimensions
